Perfect safety has an infinitely high cost. So that means no nuclear power, and lots more fossil fuels, killing millions.

Axil is not a practical man. He is a philosopher. The kind of person who will say to a person laying in front of him, "you've got a bruise, you should put some ointment on that" rather than adressing the fact that the person is not breathing!!!

The perfect is the enemy of the good. In this case it's also the ally of the worst, primarily coal.

Nuclear and hydro are currently the safest and cleanest energy sources we've got. You can always spend more on safety. This is the fundamental problem with safety analysis. You can put an extra airbag in the car. But why not 2 extra airbags? Why not 200? Why not force people to wear full helmets and crash suits in cars? Most people will think this is exaggerated, yet with cars this would save many lives. With nuclear power, further investments won't save any lives. Certainly we should not demand perfect safety, driving up the cost of the safest energy source to the point where it is no longer applied, and in stead we get the most dangerous energy sources.

It is time the philosophers start thinking practically. That means thinking in terms of alternatives. The philosophers should stop engaging in hammering the final nails on the coffin of the nuclear industry, which is ever so more stringent quality control and assurance.
