My wife and I had a crazy idea this morning--we need to make a campy 80s-type video where we sing (not me and her "us" but someone) "Thorium" to the tune of "Gloria".

I even thought up a few lyrics:

Thorium, thorium
232's your number...

This could be really stupid. Or really brilliant and stupid at the same time!

Here's the original to get you thinkin....

I've downloaded the karaoke MP3 versions of "Gloria" and think I might try to talk my wife and her sisters into giving this a try this weekend. She told me that after I told her about the song she had "Thorium" stuck in her head for days. If only we could do that to our elected officials!

Although the song was written in 1980 it's got kind of a nice techno feel to it that I think goes well with our message.

A proposed chorus, with background echo vocals in parentheses:

Thorium, (thorium)
I think you've got the number, (thorium)
I think you've got the answer, (thorium)
to the energy we're after...(thorium)
But we really don't remember,
how much progress that was made
lives and memories still fade
Echo thorium!

That part's sung about three times so slightly different versions each time could be really catchy.

I'm listening to the original over and over again and the section of the song in the middle where she sings "Gloria, how's it going to go down" might be a really good place to try to musically explain the different ways to do thorium, culminating in LFTR as the right but bold choice. Then we can reiterate about how "we really don't remember, how much progress that was made, all the data that was saved, to build thorium!"

"Thorium, how's it going to happen?"
"Doing it today's way, isn't going to get us there"
"The secret's in the salt, got to make thorium soup"
"It's too risky for the regulars, gonna have to have a new group"

"But they really don't remember"
"All the progress that was made"
"All the data that was saved"
"Liquid thorium!"

My syllables don't work for this.

I may really regret doing this in the morning but here's my latest attempt at the song:

Thorium, you’ve been waitin’ for so long.
We’ve been chasin’ all the wrong ways,
Now we’re lookin’ at an uphill wrong. (yes, this is so wrong)
I think we need to think hard,
before we start to blow it
I think we're headed for a breakdown,
And the planet starts to show it

But we really must remember
Was there something that we learned?
Before all that coal we burned
Was it thorium?

Thorium, obstacles are fallin’
As people learn about you,
Soon they will be callin'!
You have got the answer
To provide energy forever, oh-oh-oh
It’s from Thorium

Thorium, (thorium)
I think you've got the number, (thorium)
I think you've got the answer, (thorium)
to the energy we're after...(thorium)
But we really don't remember,
how much progress that was made
lives and memories still fade
Echo thorium!

A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha, Thorium,
How will it to come-to-pass?
If we try to use the old way,
the magic isn't gonna last.
Fluid fuel is the answer,
Easy mixing is the theme.
Too different for the old school,
Gonna hafta get a new team.

But they really don’t remember,
How much progress was made,
All the treasure that was saved,
To use thorium!

Thorium, (thorium)
I think you've got the number, (thorium)
I think you've got the answer, (thorium)
to the energy we're after...(thorium)
And we really don't remember,
How much progress that was made
Lives and memories will fade
Without thorium!

(Thorium, Thorium, Thorium, Thorium, Thorium)
(Thorium, Thorium, Thorium, Thorium, Thorium)

I'm totally deleting this post as soon as I come up with a better version, which I hope is soon.

Kirk!

We had no idea you made a foray into the cutthroat music and entertainment industries! Valiant. Brave. Impressive. You didn't delete this thread. No one replied in over six years!

The ghost of nuclear geek past. Your idea evidently never got produced. Nice lyric. If the budget is there for a Flibe Energy LFTR PR campaign, maybe this could be produced for the science geeks--pretty dated. Must have been a special time for you and your wife.

I want to understand the detailed designs of your liquid bismuth reductive extractors and their performance and all the other complexities of your LFTR designs. I have so much to learn yet.

Meantime, I work in music. May I?

"Gloria" cover by Laura Branigan made #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. (That was the first year for me in my chemistry program at the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point after I had abandoned my music major--biggest mistake of my life. Or was it?)

So you know, Thorium is a metal band from Copenhagen (1997-present):

Thorium are "death metal"--fairly nasty. Not good PR for thorium.

I just found Thorium Emporium--must be indie Gen III ska. That's more my bag.

The goal is how to communicate your clarity of purpose and goals to activists in this arena. You've done a lot to promote the thorium energy option since you posted this idea.

Your topic-subject-thread here falls under a public awareness campaign. WGBH in Boston makes NOVA. Their programs reach an influential audience. I would urge them to make a two-hour special episode on the thorium story. Seems to me you have special clout. Paula Aspell is executive producer. Can you write to her? She would listen to you. I get ignored. And then: always the funding.

An Inconvenient Truth from 2006 that won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature cost $1 million to make and has earned $49.7 worldwide at the box office.

A million bucks. Bet Gord would love the gig. If some of our partisans in Hollywood had your clarity of purpose and technical understanding, funds for the project would be produced--IMHO.

The hip-hop Broadway musical, Hamilton, is award-winning and big hit--still running. We need a playwright do as well with Thorium!

I wish The Good Reactor would get released!
