After reading Kirks blog yesterday I came across this:

Nuclear Power Reactors: A Study in Technological Lock-in
Author(s): Robin Cowan
Source: The Journal of Economic History, Vol. 50, No. 3 (Sep., 1990), pp. 541-567

I down loaded it at:

http://dimetic.dime-eu.org/dimetic_files/cowan1990.pdf

This fits a lot with what Charles Barton has to say and some of what Rod Adams talks about.
I find that the history of reactor design development is nearly as fascinating as that of nuclear weapons. There is no doubt in my mind of the influence, for better or worse, of cold war politics on nuclear power. Note the date of publication, some things just don't change.

Very interesting historical article. Initial estimates of HTGRs showed them operating at half the cost of LWRs. LWRs won only because the U.S. Navy forced them up a learning curve faster than any other type. LWRs probably won over HTGRs because they have familiar materials.
