Dear Kirk,

as long as radioactivity is demonized in the old industry countries there will be no nuclear revival. Regulations are not at all in line with risks. If you would put the same regulation on Saudi Oil production as on European nuclear they would have to go out of business.

Today in Germany radioactive waste is demonized but 200.000 tons/yr. sometimes more dangerous chemical waste is dumped in the former salt mines Herfa-Neurode, Teutschenthal for about 1200 €/ton without any public attention.

If I have a look on the MCFR (molten chloride fast reactor) concept with an in plant degassing, noble metal plate out and low boiling point fission product chlorides and an external reprocessing there is per each 2000 MWe reactor about 1 - 2 m3 high radioactive waste left/yr. It consists mainly of fission product chlorides as NdCl3, CeCl3. It consists of some actinide chlorides as UCL3, AmCl3 and PuCl3 (the separation efficiency is limited). Acc. to the calculations of E. Merle-Lucotte about 10 moles/yr. of sulphur and 10 moles of 36Cl/yr. are created in a big MCFR/yr.

The 36Cl issue is a perceived problem I would not spend 1$ for.

Best regards

Holger
