Brian Wang has an article on this "breakthrough" in fusion.

http://nextbigfuture.com/2014/02/fuel-g ... ially.html

The capsule costs a MILLION dollars. It makes no net energy so the fuel cost is infinite. Let's imagine it did make the whole 17 kj of fusion energy as net electric output (with a 100% efficient turbine!!).

Now that's a fuel price of just $211,764,706 per kWh.

Yes, thats 211 million dollars per kilowatt-hour.

How much cheaper would it be to make cows turn spokes, which would turn a generator?

If you read through the comments you will see it was quickly dismissed by some people that seemed to know what they were talking about: A couple of quick comments by 'USSSkipjack' pretty much told the story:

Typical NIF overselling, same story as usual. Only a fraction of the energy from the lasers made it to the hohlraum. Of course the NIF has been overselling itself for years. Many big announcements and promises, very little delivery. Also lets not forget that the design itself is absolutely unusable for energy production. The NIF is what it is, a device with the main purpose of managing the nuclear bomb stockpile and doing nuclear bomb tests without nuclear bombs. The energy stuff is just to sell it to the gullible public that is wary of yet another defense expense.

It is much worse than that. They put in 500 MEGAjoules of electricity to get 17 KILOjoules energy out. So we are talking a factor of about 30,000 energy in/ energy out. Of course the way the press release was written, this is a little less obvious.
