Just found this rather good, accurate and refreshing blog on radiophobia and nuclear power.

The fact that really stands out for me is what happened in the worst case scenario with the Chernobyl RBMK reactor, emergency responders were effectively working around an exposed reactor on fire.

134 of which were eventually diagnosed with ARS, which according to all the hysteria about nuclear power and radiation would seem to be an automatic death sentence. Of those, 28 had died within 2 months, more than two thirds primarily from skin infections as a result beta burns that would be impossible from the kind of exposure that anyone not directly exposed to an intense source of radiation such as burning core would receive. Going by all the rhetoric you would expect the remaining cohort of diagnosed ARS patients to rapidly expire. By 2001 14 more had died, which seems hardly more than the rate of the general population.

Long term treatment has included therapy for beta burn fibrosis and skin atrophy as well as for cataracts.


Meanwhile across Europe and adjacent regions thousands of women voluntarily aborted pregnancies and the removal of thousands of people from around Chernobyl itself almost certainly caused more deaths than the 28 confirmed.

You will receive more exposure to radiation in New York's Grand Central Station or the US Congress than you would in most areas of the exclusion zone around Chernobyl.

Of course that won't really protect you, from the decay of the the K-40 alone in my body, there have been thousands of particles of ionizing radiation released inside me as I've composed this, many of them penetrating gamma rays that have left my body. If you're afraid of radiation then you need to avoid people as well.

Meanwhile 7,000,000 people die each year globally as the result of air pollution mostly from fossil fuels, that works out to about 19,000 every day as opposed to 28 confirmed deaths from the worst case scenario from a reactor design that will never be built again.

It's pretty clear the anti-nuclear movement is based on myths and they're killing millions of people each year and putting us on the course to potentially billions of deaths in coming decades depending on how vicious climate change becomes.

George Monbiot did his usual professional job when looking at the accuracy of the claims of people like Helen Caldicott and the risk posed by radiation, they turn out to be far more fantasy than fact.

What I wonder sometimes is, at what point does this become criminal negligence when there is more than ample evidence to the contrary and the effects of forcing to us to continue large scale use of fossil fuels is so damaging.

Radiophobia has been and continues to be programmed into mass culture, for some it borders on religion now.
