I think that is the maintenance being imagined. Actually, I think you could just plug the channel on the fuel salt side. You could run the secondary loop at somewhat lower pressure than the core loop, and used the leaked fission products as a very sensitive leak detector. This has the advantage that the secondary side of the HX is probably at the top, so you can sniff from the top.

Not sure how to plug a channel at the bottom of the HX. Maybe you reach in with a pair of pliers and crimp the channel closed at the top and bottom.

I thought about the dimples too. I think they'd be a fine way to locate the ball bearings, but I don't like dimples by themselves because there is no straight path to direct force normal to the plates.
