Saw this on the technology news aggregator Slashdot:
The concept of space based solar power has been around for decades. The late Gerard K. O'Neill proposed building them as a way to finance space colonies in the 1970s. Recently Popular Science reported on a modern approach to building space based solar energy stations. Instead of relying on massive, orbiting space colonies filled with construction workers to put the plants together, why not automate the entire process?

I can recall similar proposals not getting great reception on this forum. This is a bad idea that just will not die. I thought I'd bring this to the attention of this forum to comment.
While this proposal is a bit different than some in that the orbital solar collectors would be constructed on the moon, not on Earth, to save on the costs of launching that mass. Making this work still requires many assumptions on future technology advances and a future economy willing to invest in that technology.
