That means that Yucca Mountain can be closed down and the $ billions used to prepare it treated as a sunk cost generated for no valid reason.

Sometimes funds are wasted because a decision which appeared to be good at the time turned out to be wrong; that can't always be avoided. In the case of Yucca Mountain, it appears that they should have known better.

Perhaps those in Utah who are afraid of the DU could be induced to object on the grounds that the DU should be used. They just might be able to generate enough publicity to cause sensible decisions to be made. Politics is often just as important as science.

Deseret News: Depleted uranium not that scary

Quote:
As the meeting wore on, one common theme became clear: DU definitely does not scare these scientists.

In their view, it's sure not Public Enemy No. 1.

On the danger scale, they seemed to rank it somewhere just above or just below eating too much sugar.

PHWR's that can burn NU do make a more efficient use of mined Uranium as compared to LEU fueled ones. However the bulk of radioactive waste is actually more. All of what would be DU in case of enriched fuel is included in the SNF.
The only way to reduce the radioactive waste substantially is to burn the U238 for fuel. The Kirk's talk at TEACII includes use of Chloride MSR's for a short period. These or alternates like TWR, if and when developed, can also be used indefinitely.
One plus mark for NU burners. Chinese have started trials of using recovered uranium from LWR's as fuel in PHWR's. This should be widely practiced and 25% of nuclear energy can be obtained from this source. Fast reactors can be working at the end of life for present generation of LWR's and supporting PHWR's. The time to start is now. Master the molten salt coolant.
