The helium cooled pebbed reactor AVR was abandoned for its temperature instabilities, the locally far too high temperatures result in Cs-137 and Sr-90 containment. I don't understand why those two elements produced in high temperature.
Another kind of gas cooled reactor EM2 allege they solved this problem, all the CS-137 could be burnt in core. I also don't know why and how

From what I understand generically about pebble bed reactors, the fault is usually with the location of the pebbles. The bed is random and can be denser locally. Pebble flow can also be unsteady so that occasionally a few pebbles might stay in the reactor much longer than they is supposed to. This is especially so with broken pebbles. Not sure if that was the case with the AVR but it is a generic issue with pebble beds.
