An interesting alternative configuration.
A molten salt based fuel may be used in the drum. It will be high temperature low pressure.
Half the tubes are double wall candu type moderator tubes. The heavy water has to be cooled as in candu, but the tubes would be running full of heavy water..
Other half of tubes can be waned coolant gas tubes for heat transfer for power. Gas or supercritical steam could be used as coolant.
Moderation is controlled by fuel strength. Shut-off rods are provided, which could double as control.
Engineering could be simplified in this manner. Fuel temperature can be in a wide range. It may. however, be kept constant by keeping a part of fuel solid and making use of phase change energy, if so preferred.

Another possibility is a lead coolant. The heat can be taken away from the reactor by lead without any high pressure system in the reactor, adding to its safety. Conversion of heat to power is another matter in common to coal or other generation. Hopefully, the efficiency of thermo-electric generation will improve so that no high pressure is required at all. Till then it saves risk and cost to keep heat generation at low pressure.

If ThF4-PuF3/233UF4 fuel is used in drum with heavy water moderator in tubes and a lead based coolant, also in tubes, it could be a good alternate design for the LFTR. I wonder if a non-flibe solvent could be a breeder. A burner could probably be designed based on reactor-grade plutonium and FNaBe. A 233UF4 fissile could make a breeder.
An irradiated metallic thorium blanket could be a source of 233U obtained by electro-refining.
