Thorium Energy, Inc. press release:
Sharp Increase of Thorium Ore Reserves, a Greener Alternative to Uranium for Use in Nuclear Power Generation, Reflected in Latest U.S.G.S. Report, Says Thorium Energy, Inc.
Quote:
Thorium Ore Reserves:
The U.S.G.S.’ latest estimate of 915,000 tons of thorium ore reserves within the claims held by Thorium Energy, Inc., in Idaho and Montana compares to the previously published U.S.G.S. estimate of 160,000 tons for the entire United States as stated in the U.S.G.S. Mineral Commodity Summaries 2008.

This is probably due mostly the Lemhi Pass thorium reserves being included in the USGS inventory to a greater extent than they were previously reported. USGS had little interest in understanding the full extent of the Lemhi Pass deposits previously.

The estimation of thorium reserves is not much different than oil, metal ores or anything else. Overall resources are always greater than reserves than can be tapped with current technology. They can only grow with time. They are still discovering new deposits of uranium, not to even mention how thorium is even more plentiful still. And yet the antinuclear crowd keeps chanting the same old lame arguement that nuclear fuels won't last any longer than the world oil supply. The thorium ore thus far discovered is probably only the tip of the iceberg compared to the thorium ore yet to be found.

How much you want to bet thorium is going to turn-up in surprising and unexpected new places in the years to come?

Nuclear technology has to move to breeder reactors. When we can get our energy from U238 or Th232 without depletion of fissile isotopes, the reserves of uranium and thorium will cease to matter. It will be equivalent to production of fresh water from sea water.
One minor step in this direction will be exploitation of ocean currents for electric power as the river based hydel resources near the end of economic exploitation. Energy from currents might be a safer source of energy than seabed drilling for oil!
