The most advanced system today employs plastic fibers with uranium-binding chemical groups grafted onto their surface. Now, researchers led by Wenbin Lin, a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have designed a metal-organic framework (MOF) to collect common uranium-containing ions dissolved in seawater. In lab tests, the material was at least four times better than the conventional plastic adsorbent at drawing the potential nuclear fuel from artificial seawater.

MOFs are an exciting technology that has seen novel developments in many areas, including membranes and absorbents. It is a merger of organic and inorganic chemistry.

Cheaply recycling the absorbent is an important cost criterium for seawater uranium extraction. How do MOFs perform here?

Just read through Ugo Bardi's work on minerals extraction from seawater.

http://www.fraw.org.uk/files/limits/bar ... s_2010.pdf

Bardi has a section on uranium. Unfortunately he makes some catastrophic errors in his calculations, for example he ignores the fact that the membrane can be recycled many times. So his conclusion that EROEI is low is wrong. (disappointing but not surprising - Bardi is one of those "scientists" with axes to grind on the anti nuclear and doomer side of the track).

I would like to have them remove uranium from drinking water to safe levels. Either way the technology can be developed for if and when required or economical for use as fuel.
In another scenario, we could develop the nuclear energy from thorium as fuel before we exhaust cheaper uranium. AHWR with Th-LEU fuel could be a good early beginning. Fast thorium breeder (MSR or solid fuel) could provide power virtually forever.

Why? There aren't meaningful water supplies contaminated with dangerous amounts of uranium. This is a completely marginal application of a technology.
