Recently we had a discussion about the barrier material between the core and blanket of MSRs and this brought up the use of depleted nickel. Nickel is a very good material for components that are exposed to high temperatures. However, nickel is not so good if it is in a high radiation field. According to a paper by Bloore/Forsberg, the use of depleted nickel, with a low nickel-58 content, can be advantageous for the development of molten salt (cooled) reactors.

There is also a group at Texas A&M University that wants to develop an ADSMS system: a subcritical molten chloride reactor coupled to a cyclotron. In a presentation of theirs I came across some pages where they address the issue of materials for their core and heat exchangers. They want to use weld-free nickel liner for these parts, to be manufactured by Weber Mfg from Canada, and they think it will be good for a lifetime exceeding 20 years. Isn't this too optimistic ? Could this weld-free nickel liner also be interesting for other MSR types ?

Any isotopic seperation for structural materials has economic and supply chain performance penalties, so we'd have to check whether its worth it.

In case of nickel, the strength at high temperature is not very good (creep limited). Composites such as carbon/silicon carbide have better performance here.

However, alloys have advantages in joining techniques - they can simply be welded.

For a first gen MSR, a nuclear grade stainless steel (stabilized austenics of the 300 series), will be good enough for a barrier and structural material. Such materials are widely used in the nuclear industry today so it is a more pragmatic approach than fancier options like isotopically seperated nickel or advanced composites.

Nickel clad materials have a lot of potential for MSR applications in my opinion as we have some good structural materials for high temperatures and long term performance when irradiated, but those materials typically do not perform well WRT corrosion with molten salts. A small layer of Ni clad can fix that aspect. In some ways it make things harder on the material qualification side, but the long term potential is very good I believe.

Re NVD are there any references to the bond integrity and mechanical properties of NVD clad material that anyone can provide links to?
