Re: Top 11 Problems Plaguing Solar And Wind Power

Solar cells for the domestic use simply have a price problem. What solar needs: Perovskite or dye sensitized solar cells, at a cost of 50€/m² lightweight cells, sheets in plastic envelope ultra cheap and fast installation ---> i envision a fast deployment system via autonomous quadcopters. Drones op...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

But wind force in 20km altitude is very soft and thin. The troposphere is very unstable and stormy but the stratosphere is very stable because there is an inversion layer(caused by ozon) that prevents that all the bad weather could come up. A natural barrier. I have asked Edmund Kelly about the life...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

That is a problem. Maybe overhead power lines need just a good camouflage. Apparently it is a problem that is going to be even bigger in future since we will need more lines. A reflective coating or maybe creating a mirage effect could help. Or maybe even a very strong buoyant structure that would b...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

I see, i would be the last to say no to a cheap transmission network. It just horrifies me when is see the german government spending 50-100 billion € on a few HVDC links to the south. It isn't about the numbers, more about crazy politics that can make projects easily very expensive for no good reas...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

well it would be great if the tripling of our current 80GW transmission network would be cheap. Nothing against it. But most of the energy would get produced over the whole year because we need excessively more energy in the winter time. It is the problem with inequal energy usage balance and theref...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

Not if the plants would belong to the 'right' people. Goldmann Sachs, E-on, Exxon mobile, the list of the gangs of the world goes on an on. If those people were really interested in erecting such plants no pirate would even dare to come 100 nautic miles close to them. I wish we wouldn't depend on th...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

I don't know what the big deal is with getting power from north african countries?
Gaddafi was pretty fast passé. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O8vM0-6EEE

If we had superconducting transmission lines northern countries could get their heating energy from the antarctic continent.

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

Which is why the focus is on borehole heat storage. The problem there are losses, which is why it's only feasible at a community or commercial building level. There is work on phase change materials (waxes with a melting point around 20-50C) for heat storage, and various hydrated minerals which giv...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

I am pretty sure everyone will be happy to spend the min of 20,000 $ on the erection of such systems in advance. XD Capital costs uf such systems have to be low since the majority of people is simply not able to afford such wealth. Here in Germany we are pioneers in that field and it turns out that ...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

Did you know that plants grow even better in 1000ppm CO2 atmosphere? Greenhouse owners know that and increase the amount of C02 in their houses. Crops worldwide have increased because of that. In earths history we had very often concentrations with a few thousand ppm. Fossils tell us that. There wil...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

The problem with the excess electricity is the long term storability. Or more the huge amount of energy you need only in winter. You would need to heavily overbuild the system only for the winter. Storing it as gas, which we need anyway, is therefore the best solution. http://vbt.ebi.kit.edu/index.p...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

Germany uses per year 80 billion m³ of gas and has storage capabilities of over 22 billion m³. The construction of new caverns is very cheap and easy. Conversion of electricity to gas is very efficient and cheap. There would be no way to heat houses electrically. Because erecting 250 additional GW t...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

If energy generation costs decreases 4 fold because of the 400% increase then yes it becomes almost negligibly. And there will be another 60% decrease of costs in the panel production for the future. one example: http://www.raytonsolar.com The shading effect has already being calculated by stratosol...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

well it would be solar at its best. And not an utopia scenario like space based solar power is right now. One would need an energy storage for the night. Right. I consider this concept to be a game changer. The lift force of the buoyancy hast to be very strong in order to keep it in place. It could ...

Re: The incredible potential of stratospheric fusion power

The temperature in that altitude is -60°C. So the panels or concentrating cells would have enough cooling. No humidity or dust up there. Air is very thin. 0.12kg/m³. Winds at max reach 180km/h in the winter. Polar vertices. But again the medium is 10x thinner. So it should compare more to soft/mediu...
