Re: Carbon neutral synthetic fuels

I, too, got interested in the rotary engine for hydrogen. However the efficiency is only about 25%, about half achievable with fuel cells and electric motors.

Re: Dr. James Hansen latest on nuclear and CAGW

[quote=Well HVDC and increasingly UHVAC (gas insulated lines actually start to beat pylons on price by about 1000kV[/quote]

ThorConIsle gas-insulated-switchgear hall has room for HVDC conversion equipment, probably economic for transmission over 100 km or so.

Re: Dr. James Hansen latest on nuclear and CAGW

ThorCon electricity at 3 cents/kWh (pre tax/fees) is cheaper than coal and cheaper than natural gas in LNG form. Natural gas is pipeline constrained in the NE US. It's going to be hard to compete with natural gas if the NGCT is at the wellhead.

Here's an animation of a land-based version of ThorCon. The structure is mainly a steel/concrete/steel sandwich. http://thorconpower.com/design/erection

Re: Policy change in Japan

I'm not sure what happened. I though the US was negotiating with Japan to get them to agree not to do reprocessing, but to bring them to Argonne Labs to study the topic. So now they can reprocess if they like?

Here's a marketing description of the VVER 1200, with many tech specs. I don't remembers seeing anything so comprehensive for the Westinghouse AP1000. http://www.rosatom.ru/upload/iblock/0be ... b18743.pdf
