Enhanced CANDU 6 Design Features

The EC6 reactor design benefits from the proven principles and characteristics of the CANDU 6 design and decades of operation.

Proven CANDU strengths include:

•Two independent safety shutdown systems
•Refuelling during on power operation
•Passive water tank located in the containment
•Separate low-temperature, low-pressure moderator that provides inherently passive heat sinks by permitting heat to be removed from the reactor core under abnormal conditions
•Modular, horizontal fuel channel core
•Reactor vault that is filled with cool light water, that surrounds the reactor core
•Reactor building access for maintenance activities during on-power operation

I think it is wise to promote a proven design. I can, however, think of two improvements in EC-6 and Indian 500/700MW PHWR.
1. A concentrated solution of BeF2 as coolant. It will work at lower pressure improving safety and pressure tube life.
2. Th-19.75%LEU MOX fuel of AHWR300-LEU type which has a high burn up, nearly 5-6 times the natural uranium.

But, isn't BeF chemically incompatible with zirconium? And Zr tubes are pretty much required in a CANDU-derived design, aren't they?
