Thermal Spectrum Advantages?

Post by matthewwight » Mar 11, 2019 8:33 am

What are some advantages a thermal spectrum reactor, over a fast reactor?

If I am not mistaken fast reactors would need sodium coolant which is more reactive in air and water than Flibe salts.

Criticality can't be maintained without moderator in Thermal perhaps is another.

Fast neutrons wreck most reactor materials quite quickly.

Fast reactors require very large amounts of fissile material.

The concentration of the fissile material has criticality concerns in accidents. For example, if the material is dropped in water, you may get an explosion big enough to kill people and disperse the material widely.

As a counterpoint, fast reactors are more compact. The fuel waste is less. The fertile fuel is also burnt in higher proportion. Earlier Russian nuclear submarines used fast reactors.
