HB11 Energy Headed by Professor Heinrich Hora, HB11 Energy promises low cost fusion power through new developments in laser boron fusion. Heinrich is a Professor Emeritus at University of New South Wales, Australia, and Vice-President of the Royal Society of New South Wales. “We expect to be able to provide energy for about ¼ of the price of coal fired power, without any carbon emissions or radioactive by-products, which will be disruptive to the power industry. With the small size and footprint of a HB11 power station, the addressable market is expected to reach further than the power grid to applications such as ships, submarines, large factories or to remote locations such as isolated towns and mine sites.” "Unlike Deuterium Tritium fusion and fission techniques, the HB11 reaction is sufficiently clean with respect to production of any harmful by-products or radiation. I just heard from them. They say they are about 10 years from a fully functional prototype, and 2-3 years away from a laboratory proof-of-concept. They stress that the theoretical basis is now well established and that their fusion method will be easier to manage and cheaper than D-T fusion.

If fusion at low cost is possible, what will that do to fission reactors and investments? If low cost fusion is not possible, then we had better work on fission to find a way to make it cleaner and cheaper and safer. Low Energy Nuclear Reaction is now pretty much dead after Rossi has been exposed as a fraud. No LENR based company has anything beyond measuring errors and hype. Hot fusion is difficult and we are at least 10 years away from any working prototype. Luckily, we do have enough fossil fuels to last another 100 years. Right now, fossil fuels are the only thing keeping us from starving to death, yet the media keeps condemning them as evil. Is eating and surviving evil?

There is a patent application that reveals some more details:

The fuel rods have to be very thin: 10mm x 0.2mm. Focus 30PW of laser power onto a surface that small? Flattop beam profile?

The little coil capacitor device is 30mm wide, 2mm thick and made of nickel. That's a lot of matter that is vaporized with every shot. Were does all that matter go? Sublime on the optical windows? Attenuate the next laser pulse?
