ORNL and China lab R&D for salt cooled reactors

Post by Tim Flavin » Mar 19, 2015 9:34 am

Green Car Congress has a posting about a cooperative research and development agreement for molten salt cooled reactors. (Link)

Looks like they will be doing some research that is applies to molten salt fueled reactors too. This includes lithium-7 cost, structural alloy development and qualification, and tritium control.

On the one hand very disappointing. No thorium. Instead of liquid sodium or liquid lead or high pressure water they will use liquid fluoride salt. At least we will get some learning on piping and pumping liquid fluoride salt.

The knowledge of handling molten salts is going to be very important for MSRs. It could give a safer secondary coolant for fast reactors in a shorter time frame.
A pool of molten salt or another coolant could not only be safer with sodium but also provide energy storage to enable load following. A coil dipped in this pool could form a simpler heat extractor.
