I teach physics to 8th graders. Their 5-month engineering project this year is to design a nuclear powered research submarine (non-military). One of my students in the reactor department is very excited about proposing a Thorium reactor. I am not sure about the application for marine shipping. Are power density and safety issues too limiting for subs?
Through this project, I am trying to introduce applications of physics that include future nuclear possibilities.

Thanks much,
